Payatas contributes

What would you expect from a garbage dumpsite? Germs, people haggling for garbage they can sell, or even dead bodies.

This is a site from Payatas, the renowned dumpsite that killed people last July 11, 2000, where a "garbage mountain" collapsed on the houses of the poor people residing there. The garbage dump in Payatas is piled as high as seven stories!

Many of the residents make their living by digging "fresh" thrash, scavenging for cardboard, wood, glass, metal, plastic

and other items that can be sold.

Even though that this is the harsh reality on Payatas, they never lose hope that one day, our country would change for the better. A voluntary movement for the campaign of Noynoy Aquino went to the dumpsite and asked for the support of the people from Payatas. I was moved when I learned that the so called squatters of Payatas offered their hard earned money to support Noynoy's campaign for Presidency.

There is one quote from the residents there, "Dalawang Piso lang po maibibigay ko, pero ok lang, malay natin, swertihin si Noynoy, kasi galing naman sa puso ko ung dalawang piso na yan."

This is really an improvement on how people are reacting and wanting change for a good governance. You would typically see "trapos" and rich political aspirants giving out money to these poor people. But today, we saw how people want change and improve their lives. I hope and pray that trapos would not come and use their ill gotten wealth to sway these honest people into selling their votes.
